What Is Stretch Steel?

Stretch steel, commonly known as expanded metal sheet or expanded metal mesh, is made by cutting and stretching a steel sheet. This process creates a repeating pattern of openings without removing material. Expanded metal is commonly used for steps and flooring, construction rigging, fencing, guards, and security applications. But how does steel behave when it is stretched? In this article, we will look at how expanded metal is made and how steel responds to applied force. We will also explain the mechanical properties of steel and how these properties affect the performance and selection of stretch steel.

Can Steel Stretch?

Yes, steel can stretch when we apply a force to it. But how far it can stretch before it gets permanently damaged depends on the type of steel, how thick it is, and what its mechanical properties are. When steel is loaded within its elastic range, it deforms in the direction of the applied force and returns to its original dimensions when the load is removed. This is because it is still within its elastic range, so it does not become permanently deformed.

The term “stretch steel” can also refer to a steel structure produced by directly cutting and stretching a sheet to create an open mesh pattern. Rather than removing material, the sheet is slit and expanded to form interconnected openings. The result is a lightweight, open structure that allows air and light to pass through and uses material efficiently by conserving the original metal. The resulting expanded sheet can provide strength, ventilation, and visibility while using material efficiently.

Elasticity, Ductility, Yield Strength, and Tensile Strength

These properties are important when selecting stretch steel and during the expanding process. Elasticity is the ability of steel to recover its original dimensions after a load is removed, provided the material remains below its elastic limit, while ductility is the ability of steel to undergo plastic deformation before fracture. Higher ductility allows us to deform steel more without cracking or breaking. Yield strength is the stress at which permanent plastic deformation begins, while tensile strength is the maximum stress a material can withstand before breaking. During production, the steel must have sufficient ductility to withstand the slitting and stretching process without cracking or breaking. Understanding these limits helps us stretch the steel without tearing it, whether we are using grades of mild steel or stainless steel.

Benefits and Types of Stretch Steel

Expanded metal has the advantage of efficient material use. As mentioned in other sections, the sheet metal is slit and expanded without removing material, creating an interconnected metal mesh structure. Different types of stretch steel may offer a variety of applications. Raised expanded metal provides a textured surface that can improve traction for walkways, steps, platforms, and flooring. Flattened expanded metal provides a smoother surface for applications such as screens and architectural designs.

Expanded Metal Sizes

Expanded metal sizes depend on the opening dimensions, strand geometry, and sheet thickness. Metal Supermarkets offers opening sizes from 0.188 to 1.500 in. and gauges from #20 to #6. Expanded metal is available in both raised and flattened configurations, with size and thickness selected based on the application.

Choosing the Right Metal Sheet for Expanded Metal

Specifying the right steel sheet for expanded metal manufacturing depends on the intended mechanical demands of the project. Sheet thickness, opening dimensions, strand geometry, and overall configuration directly influence mechanical performance, governing load capacity, unit mass, open space ratio, and light transmission. In addition, the selection should depend on the environment in which the material will be used. The type of atmosphere and corrosive environment in which the material will operate should be evaluated.

  • Mild Steel Expanded Sheet offers good strength and excellent weldability but has relatively poor corrosion resistance, making it suitable for structural, industrial, and general applications.
  • Stainless Steel Expanded Sheet 304 provides excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and good mechanical performance, making it suitable for industrial, architectural, screening, security, and flooring applications.
